The historian thought that the remains belong to the soldier, which was part of a British force at the end of the war in Europe, during the Second World War. They may be dying while attacking the Gothic Line, a defensive position established by the Germans as they were slowly pushed north by Allied forces.

The local police were notified of the find and the discovery has been taken to a mortuary in the town of Imola for further examination.
